Bamboo Rafting in kerala

Dewalokam home stay- Kochi

Dewalokam is the ancestral farm of Alilakuzhy family an ancient Syrian Christian family of Kerala. The family has an organic farm and tell you about the unusual trees and plants, many of which have medicinal uses. The word Dewalokam may be translated into “paradise”. Their concept is to retain the world as it was created by God, full of fruits and vegetables, milk and honey all produced organically without pesticides or chemical fertilisers.

The area is tucked away beyond commercial rubber plantations in a secluded haven. Bounded by a tranquil river and nature reserve, you can choose to be as active or as relaxed as you wish, away from the bustle of tourist India.

This is a place where you can truly wind down, swinging in the hammocks dotted between the trees on the estate or floating gently in the freshwater pool.

Dewalokam is in the midlands (spice belt) of Kerala, the centre of spices for thousands of years. The farm has a rich collection of all spices like pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, ginger, turmeric and so on.

This farm is not a tourist centre at all. Jose and Sinta, farmers by tradition and teachers by profession, started taking in guests to stay with them, because of their elder brother Fr. Paul Alilakuzhy visited the family farm with his friends in Germany. Soon, friends and family encouraged them to open the farm for paying guests.

An uninhabited little island all to yourself, no cellular network, no electricity, wood fired food and surrounded by wildlife. Sounds pretty much like a dream. Doesn’t it? In short, I am talking about Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in Kerala.

We had read quite a lot of good things about Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary and had been yearning to visit it for quite some time and ultimately the desire became a reality as we were able to plan for a long weekend to this place.

Parambikulam Jungle Trek

Me and my cousins were planning for a weekend trip. We were discussing on where to hangout for the weekend. Finally, we decided to go to Pollachi – Top Slip and Valparai. So I searched throught the internet to find details about these places. Somewhere during that search, I found a place called ‘Parambikulam’.

On the 27th of Jan we spent the night in the Parambikulam Tiger reserve. This was the main reason that we left the easy life by the sea side and travelled for hours on end along winding roads through the Western Ghats because we’d read how wonderful this place was.

BAMBOO RAFTING IN PERIYAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

This is a dawn to dusk range hiking and rafting programme through some of the richest forest tracts of Periyar Tiger Reserve. Starting at 8 am from the boat landing, a mosaic of habitats will be traversed before the party gets into rafts made of bamboos.

While rafting, keep your eyes and ears open to take in some of the beautiful visuals and captivating sounds. And photographers will get no time to take their fingers from the shutter button.

Each team comprising ten tourists will be accompanied by an armed forest guard and four guides. Most of these guides belong to the tribal communities, who are familiar with every nook and cranny of these dense forests. They are part of the Eco Development Project launched by the government.

The travellers will be provided breakfast comprising bread, jam, and fruits. Tea, snacks and packed lunch will also be served en route. The raft journey finally takes one to the catchment area of the Periyar Tiger Reserve.

Those who want to spend some more time in the jungle can opt for a stay at the Jungle Inn – a one-bedroom accommodation made of bamboo. It resembles the traditional tree-top huts of Kerala called erumadam. A night in candle light that too in the midst of a jungle! Irresistible, isn’t it? Accommodation is also available at Aranya Nivas, a property managed by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) Hotels & Resorts.

MONKEY’S WORDS:

Your feet will get wet on the raft/walk. Wear appropriate clothing, take some water with you as there is quite an amount of the walking involved! Try your best to avoid the leeches!
